This Peppermint Grove project with Talo Construction and Space Agency Architects has been one of those — a job we’ve returned to several times as different parts of the design come to life.

Early on, our work focused on remedial brickwork to the existing structure, carefully tying new work into the original walls.

From there, the attention shifted to the new basement at the rear of the property, where Maxi brick and Krause Emperor bricks in Ghost started defining the new spaces.

Most recently, we’ve been back onsite working through the rumpus room at the front of the home — another step in seeing the project gradually take shape.

And there’s still plenty to come. We’ll be returning soon to begin the ground and first floor brickwork at the rear of the property, where some feature brickwork is planned 🧱

Looking forward to sharing more of this one as it continues to evolve.

Cottesloe House 🏠

This home had many unique features, but one of the most distinctive is the use of dog-tooth stack bond brickwork to introduce depth, shadow, and texture to the façade.

By projecting select brick courses, the wall shifts throughout the day — catching light, casting shadow, and adding visual interest to what would otherwise be a flat surface.

While simple in concept, this type of brickwork demands precision. Every projection must align consistently, which requires careful planning, methodical execution, and the use of a custom jig to maintain accuracy across the build.

Once complete, the brickwork was painted, softening the overall appearance while still allowing the shadow lines to define the façade’s character.

It’s a great example of how considered brick detailing can elevate a home — not through excess, but through restraint, rhythm, and craft.

It started with a sample panel. 🧱

Before a single wall was built, we laid side-by-side samples to explore how the same brick could deliver two very different finishes — clean and precise, or raw and tactile.

The client gravitated toward the hand-split option. A more rustic, imperfect texture created by splitting standard face bricks by hand using traditional tools.
No imported bricks. No custom manufacture. Just careful technique and consistency across every course.

That decision carried through to this feature wall in a standalone studio, where the hand-split brickwork adds warmth, texture, and a distinctly architectural quality to the space.

It’s a reminder that some of the most impactful brickwork isn’t about chasing the newest product. It’s about understanding material, testing ideas early, and having the right team on site to execute it properly.

Protruding brickwork is one of those techniques that feels both timeless and contemporary, and it’s something we’re seeing more architects lean into as design moves toward texture, shadow, and honest materials 🧱

Rather than sitting flush, selected bricks are set proud of the wall plane. The result is a surface that changes throughout the day as light moves across it, creating depth and character without relying on applied finishes.

From a construction point of view, protruding brickwork demands precision. Setting out is critical, coursing must be consistent, and every projection needs to be intentional. There’s nowhere to hide — the craftsmanship is on full display.

We often see this style used on:

🧱 Boundary and garden walls where texture and shadow are part of the design language
